Here at SCS we get some fairly unusual and often tricky items to make covers for and this one was no exception. A few months ago we manufactured a barge cover to protect the items it transports.
The barge in question already had a sturdy metal frame which was at an appropriate height for a barge cover to be fitted. Although the frame made the job slightly easier for us it did result in some meticulous measuring to ensure each canvas panel would fit the area.
The frame was divided into segments and measured accordingly. Once the measurements made it back to base cutting and machining could begin. Each panel was designed to have a pocket on the ends, which would then be eyeletted. The eyelets eventually acting as a method of fastening the panels to the frame via small bungee cords.
The beauty of this eyelet and bungee method is partly the flexibility, in that is required one panel can be removed without disturbing other panels. Another positive is that there is a slight amount of give – very useful when in the high winds the barge may encounter.
Although the cover looks simple once in position it’s the work of scrupulous measuring, drawing and machining by our team. Each bar on the frame needed to be considered, its diameter known along with its stability. We also had to be aware of cross points in the frame and ensure that when fitting eyelets the bungee fixings wouldn’t be in the way of the next panel’s bungees.
We are pleased with the results and are hopefully this alternative canvas solution proves a long-term success in covers goods. Our customers was also satisfied with the end product and impressed with the ingenuity our teams had shown to create the best possible solution for his barge cover.
