Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service is dedicated to making Derbyshire a safer place to live, work and visit. The organisation is responsible for the activity of 31 fire stations across the county from Alfreton to Wirksworth. Covering more than 1,000 square miles, including both rural and urban populations, serving a community of more than 1.05million people.
The work of the service is split into three key categories: Prevention, protection, and response. The teams also work alongside other emergency services and other Fire and Rescue authorities across borders, as part of a national response to emergencies.
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service approached Specialised Canvas with a request to manufacture Breathing Apparatus Cylinder Bags. Each firefighter uses this equipment to carry oxygen tanks during rescues and can make a lifesaving difference for both the members of the public and the Fire & Rescue team.
The client wanted a robust and resilient product that would be able to withstand the extreme conditions of a burning building, as well as comfortably taking the weight of a full tank of oxygen in periods of high activity. The request called for the apparatus bags to be simple and effective in both design and functionality. In pressured situations, firefighters need to be able to make fast decisions, with limited obstacles and this equipment is designed to facilitate that.
Specialised Canvas designed and manufactured the BA cylinder bags made from fire retardant PVC. The custom printed pieces are a vibrant yellow with ‘Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service’ clearly visible on the front and will be resistant to the high temperatures expected for firefighters. Each bag is hand-sewn with double thickness material at the base to accommodate the weight of a full tank of compressed air without becoming damaged.
All BA cylinder bags come with Velcro labels and plastic zips to allow for easy access and use with or without firefighter gloves on. Bright green and red labels show whether the tank is full or ‘MT’ for quick and easy identification and action. Each bag also features a photoluminescent strip. Rather than relying on a source of light to reflect, this strip absorbs light and can beam out and make someone visible even through thick fog and smoke.
